Thoba Mazibuko, the former Chief Operations Officer of Athletics Eswatini (AE), has been appointed as the Director of the Olympafrica Centre. This announcement was made by Maxwell Jele, the Chief Executive Officer of the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA), during a press conference held at Mountain View, Mbabane on May 15, 2024.

The Olympafrica Centre in Lobamba

The Olympafrica Centre, which aims to promote social development through sport, is based in Lobamba, Eswatini. It is located next to the Somhlolo National Stadium where the EOCGA offices are also situated. The Olympafrica programme focuses on constructing centers that spread the Olympic spirit and provide mass education, with a particular emphasis on sport and local sports facilities. These centers are self-managed by the local populations and offer facilities for various activities, including sports, culture, economics, and education.

Mazibuko’s Responsibilities

As the newly appointed Director, Thoba Mazibuko will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the OlympAfrica Centre. He is also tasked with spearheading innovative measures that will see the operations of the center as self sustainable and generate revenue.

The venue offers a range of sporting courts and playing venues, including tennis, netball, basketball, volleyball, teqball, handball, and many more. Mazibuko expressed his readiness for the challenge ahead and hopes that the country will continue to develop in the field of sports.

He also took time and appreciated AE for the experience and expressed his willingness to assist them as a volunteer and that window is opened to every association that he has worked with before. He also expressed his excitement in joining EOCGA, which he termed as an exciting institution which has made tremendous growth over a short period of time. He concluded by crediting the EOCGA President, CEO, the board and staff for their exceptional work ethic.
