Eswatini, through the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC) successfully hosted the 2023 Regional Annual Sports Awards where Namibia and Zambia reigned supreme and dominated the accolades on the glamorous event held at Esibayeni Lodge in Mastapha.

Both countries, which had six and five entries respectively, returned home with three trophies apiece from the possible 12 categories. Eswatini had two entries in Hayley Hoy (Junior Sportswoman of the Year) and Sihlelelwe Matsebula ( Junior Sportsman of the Year) for which the latter won, much to the delight of the nation!

The event which was well attended by high profile names from the region within the sports fraternity lasted for the better part of the night and was well planned and executed. Eswatini was lauded by the African Union Council (AUSC) Region V Chief Executive Officer, Stanley Mutoya for the success of the 2023 RASA citing the ills of COVID and the financial muscle needed to make such an event a success.

The Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Harris Bulunga, who also was in attendance, congratulated all the winners on the night and further challenged the athletes to look beyond winning medals and breaking records but encouraged the athletes to have more impact at global stage.

On the other hand, Junior Sportsman of the year winner, Sihlelelwe Matsebula said he was overly amazed by the achievement and that he had never ever dreamt of winning this big. He thanked the unending support from his mother, coaches and the entire taekwondo family.
