In a historic step for the future of sport in Eswatini, the Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Hon. Bongani Nzima, officially launched the Eswatini High-Performance Sports Strategy 2025–2036—a bold, game-changing vision that aims to elevate the country’s presence on the global sporting stage. The landmark event, attended by top government officials in sport and the Executive Board of the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) led by President Adam Mthethwa, marks a turning point in Eswatini’s sporting development and national aspirations.

This strategy represents more than just a policy document; it is a national call to action, a comprehensive blueprint designed to unlock the full potential of sport in Eswatini. Aligned with the national Sports and Recreation Policy and soon to be reinforced by the new Sports Act, the strategy reflects a powerful shift in the country’s view of sport—from a recreational activity to a strategic pillar for national unity, pride, health, economic development, and youth empowerment.

At the heart of the strategy lies an ambitious yet achievable vision: to secure Eswatini’s first Olympic medal by the year 2036. However, the plan goes far beyond podium finishes. It lays the foundation for lasting sporting systems, a culture of excellence and discipline, and the development of a generation of athletes who not only compete but thrive on the international stage. The focus is clear—build, inspire, and excel.

Hon. Nzima used the occasion to affirm the Government of Eswatini’s unwavering support for the strategy, stating that the vision will be backed by progressive policy, continued infrastructure development, and increased financial investment. The Minister highlighted a significant increase in the national sports budget—from E7 million in 2022 to E19 million in 2025—as a clear indication of government intent. He further emphasized the commitment to collaborate closely with EOCGA, the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC), National Federations, and other critical partners to ensure the successful implementation of the strategy.

Built on a foundation of five strategic pillars, the High-Performance Sports Strategy prioritizes Talent Identification and Development, Governance and Leadership, Sports Science and Technology, International Exposure, and Partnerships and Funding. These pillars aim to support athletes at every level—from rural schools to elite training centers—while promoting transparency, leveraging technology, expanding international competition opportunities, and mobilizing resources through private sector and international partnerships.

In his address, Hon. Nzima issued a clear call to action for all stakeholders. He urged National Federations to own and implement the strategy with determination, called on the private sector to view sport not just as corporate social responsibility but as a meaningful investment in national development, and reminded athletes that they are the driving force behind this vision—with their country fully behind them.

The atmosphere at the launch was charged with optimism and resolve, as attendees were reminded that this is more than a government project—it is a national mission. The challenge was clear: Let us be the generation that delivers Eswatini its first Olympic medal. Let us believe. Let us act. With unity, dedication, and relentless effort, Eswatini now embarks on a new chapter of sporting excellence.
